At last, a DCA post that contains fact rather than accusation.

Thank you for clearing that up, Jenny.

i for one would very much like to see the photos - i would never break in to see them so if there are a few photos i could see i would like that very much.

I can arrange a visit. I am going there in March to assess the site. I also have the photos printed. Please respect JennyPs post above though. There are scientific experiments going on in there so we need to be careful. And I will be going in with a member of the BGS. Mel.

I would point out that the only post on this thread other than Jenny's to carry a DCA officers title is post 23, which is in no way accusing, so to say "At last, a DCA post that contains fact rather than accusation." is inaccurate, these were not DCA posts, just personal opinions.

It is agreed protocol by all DCA officers that their official title only be used on posts that are relevant to DCA, personal comments should not carry reference to the organisation.

Reforma, Photos are available for viewing on Facebook and have been since August last year, the first time I saw them and got a wee bit confused at the reference to Derbyshire!

No, they are not any more, (I've just checked), Steve took them down after realising the sensitive nature of the site. Read Jenny's post above please.

Depends who's pictures/account/group your looking at Mel...I can see them, somewhere.

Much as I appreciate the reply to the thread from Jenny, the problem here is that although people will obviously realise the conversation issues for the place, I didn't run into *anything* that indicated an active experiment taking place, despite a fair bit of research to find it. No-one seems to address the fact that you can't have it both ways. If you insist on keeping places "secret", then problems like this *are* going to happen.

1. You mean conservation issues, not "conversation issues", surely?

2. "problems like this" are NOT going to happen unless someone happens to publicise these sites by posting photos of them, (excellent ones admittedly), then telling everyone about them!

3. I will be going in there with a member of the British Geological Survey (BGS) in March and help him sort out any problems with his experiments if needed. If water levels are low enough, I might even be able to mend the statagmite that was broken and being used as a water level monitor. We shall see.

I'd like a small wager that more people have been alerted to the site by the continued discussion on here than ever were by the original posting of the photos.

If you don't believe that, Mel, try googling it.

U R probably quite right, which is one the reasons it should never have been publicised in the first place...  :coffee:

Reminds me of game shows on TV where they say to contestants - 'And here is the holiday you would have won, but sadly you don't have enough points!'

I'd suggest the reason this thread was started was to moan about the publication of pictures, not excitement over them. So no, the publicising of the site hasn't been because of the pictures, it's been because of some cavers need to feel important.

The site is a reasonable secret, but pictures are still available on facebook, flickr and at least two speakers I have seen have presented the slides. When I questioned the speakers about the location, one told me the name and that access was not allowed. The other told me the name of the site, gave me a description of the tunnel and the contact details to attempt to get on a trip in there.

I'm not sure whether I'll go, as it doesn't sound particularly exciting, but if I do, rest assured, I'll post my pictures wherever I like and to hell with the rest of you.

Categorically disagree with this here Mel. Secret sites, whatever the reason, are not appropriate for an organisation like the DCA. If the DCA has it's hand in something then it needs to be public or else we loose all trust from the caving community. If the body who wanted the DCA's help gating it wanted it a secret they should not have asked a membership body like DCA to help.
It's not a cave or mine so probably should not be anything to do with us anyway.

I believe the majority of people would respect the site, the experiments and the access arrangements if they are aware of them.

Publicise it in the usual places, and maybe put a sign on the gate explaining what it's all about.  Then there is no excuse for anyone who ignores all the recommendations and causes damage (rather than someone unwittingly disturbing an experiment).

Think you have that spot on there mark.

And whilst I dont particularly agree with the 'to hell with you rest of you' attitude, I've nothing against the publication of the photos. To be honest - I saw some photos years ago.  I've never really been desperate to go see for myself, as ash says, it doesn't sound that exiting, and I've seen the piccies.
Id rather that everyone gets to see the piccies, and can be satisfied with that and respects the reason for restricting access.

Bit like seeing pics of other restricted places, cant think of a good example - say the houses of parliament. Great that I can see pictures of it, but I dont demand a right to go and actually sit on the benches etc (crap example).

Given the site is on private property, it is difficult to see how anyone could unwittingly disturb an experiment unless they had gained access illicitly.  :coffee:

I think you missed a "h" out of that last sentence, Sam?  ;)
