Very silly pics

From a while ago apparently, but still great.

A mate of mine from Blackburn told me how it was done, apparently one of the employees about to be made redundant went up the tower and put bits of waxed paper in the electrical connectors for the H, I and E letters so when they turned the sign on, those lights didn't light up.

I worked near to Thwaites' brewery (pronounced locally as "Twaitses") when that happened. Most folk thought it was hilarious and many went out of their way to take photographs of it. A lot of my misspent youth involved drinking Thwaites' ales and I was quite upset when they closed it down. Many locals were really very upset when they also got rid of the magnificent drey horses that still delivered to many Blackburn pubs.

An even earlier tragedy was when they closed down the old Dutton's brewery in Blackburn. My Dad worked there and every month a wagon would deliver four crates of beer which every employee was entitled to. One crate was always the beer known as "Dutton's OBJ" (which stood for "Oh Be Joyful"). When cavers from that area explored OBJ Hole near GG, that beer was the inspiration for the pothole's name.
