Hello from SLovenia
« on: June 14, 2018, 08:14:04 am »
Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm not new caver. Fact is I'm growing old.  ;D Some 42 years since first cave.  I'm here to have a look at different caving communities and practice in other parts of world.

Hello!

Hi Vanja

Welcome to the forum - i hope that you enjoy finding out about British cavers ;-)

I visited Slovenia for a week of caving this April - based near Laze.

I enjoyed the caves that i visited, but struggled to find out about how to get access to more difficult trips

For instance we tried to visit Ferranova bu┼ża but found the entrance locked, and we had no way of finding out how to get a key or what ropes and belays to take.

Is there a way of finding out about how to visit more challenging caves in Slovenia?

Best wishes
Beardy

Best way is to contact one of local caving clubs here. I do not advise anyone to wander around unguided. You might get bear or pack of wolves for company.  ;D  Locals do know terrain and local caves and I bet they will be happy to assist you and guide you. No charge of course. Caver to caver does not do that.
If you plan next visit to Slovenia feel free to contact me on  pm and I will be glad to help you. Make a list of your wishes. It will be easier for all.

While we talk. Can someone help me with info about cave catalog in UK. Do you have national cave catalog? Who manages it? Where can I get more info?

Hi Vanja

Thanks for your offer to help next time i visit.

Regarding Britain I don't think that there is one national catalog - but each caving region seems to be creating their own catalogs

Here are some useful links to whet your appetite

I guess you can not get access to on-line version because there is none.  ;D
It is hard to believe, but national cave catalog exists only on paper. I know. I'm one that wants to change this. This is part of the reason I'm here. I want to learn and find out if anyone would be interested in cooperating in new on-line system I'm building. I will need help here.

For them not to answer direct mail .... Maybe don't even know how rude that is. :-)

Bears and wolves? Slovenia has cca 600 brown bears, 50 wolves and few lynx. Most of them living in S and SE of country. Just around my home. So if you really want adrenaline caving, just go in caves in winter.  If you wake on of them, you will not be first one to do so ...  :o

Now I'll need days to study these links. This is great  :clap2:

Wow interesting stuff about the bears, wolves and lynx  - i'm glad i didn't know about that in April  ;-)

I'm glad that you like the links - I hope that they provide some inspiration.

Interesting comments about the Solvenian catalog

I did see an online version in April, it was password protected, but definitely online.

Both a Solvenian caver that we stayed with and one of our group had access to this resource from the Solvenian Caving Federation

It seemed to have lots of scans of paperwork relating to each of the 13,000 caves in Slovenia

So not very interactive (like this one for Sardina - https://www.catastospeleologicoregionale.sardegna.it/webgis/#)

But it did give locations and had some surveys and information

Good luck with your project - & I hope you can find out about the electronic version as may save you some work

Regards
