In the shower after a bit of digging, thought it fun to find out what you did today. May be like Twitter, 140-ish letters per post, not counting but short, not full reports

Trying to get myself ready for Weavers Point on saturday, ~200ft (60m) bluff freehang on which we practice weighted rappels for long drops. Since next weekend is.....WHITESIDES!!!!! (750ft!!!)

There is vertical practice tonight (it is morning here still!) which I may or may not make it too...part of getting myself ready includes an emergency doc visit in an hour and hoping I dont need surgery or some sort of outpatient procedure that I'll need some recovery time for.

I am genuinely surprised that such an ardent caver has taken 5 years to discover the BCRA conference (as it used to be called, now HE) something to do with the  marketing of this event? or comunication at club level?

I think its mainly just geography.

Yes,  I admit  never really took an interest in it until more recently. I had no idea it goes into the interesting expedition stuff and there would be so much to do and see, I thought it was things for the older "generation". But mainly I guess I never fancied traveling all that way and not doing any caving.  In the last few years I would have gone but I knew no one else who was going :(. But this time loads I knew went of course.

Hopefully I can entice someone to come with me to Mendips next year as I definitely want to go back.

Since folks seemed to like my video of Josh's visit....thought I'd share this one of our trip last weekend to Whiteside, NC. It is abou a 750ft cliff, 650 of that freehang, which our long rope team is currently training at for both Golondrinas and other big Mexico pits this winter, and for El Capitan (vertical half-mile, single rope freehang) next summer.

I patched my undersuit, in between putting epidurals in pregnant ladies. I think the midwifes think I'm a bit crazy.

You took your undersuit into a sterile hospital environment?

No, I took it into a hospital environment. I think stitching it in theatre would probably raise more than eyebrows

White Texolex not good enough, 1984 Centurion, not good enough, didn't like 1979 centurion (mind you, that might have something to do with the ear defenders and visor - mining hat.) Be happy to, but don't hold your breath. I think it's a weather related problem, every time I look out the window and it isn't sunny I tend to assume it'll dry quicker in the car.

Never works very well though.

went looking for a new cave entrance, I know its there on the opposite side of the dale somewhere but I can't see it through the trees even if i climb down the dale side. On google earth I can see the limestone cliffs where it should be and am in the correct place on an OS map.
I may have to take a machete with me next time.

(I know its there because I have seen the cold air rising when it gets cold,.)

Checked out performance of new caving knife bought from Starless River after old knife failed to sever piece of tape on recent trip.

Tied old rope to beam in garage, held taut in left hand, sliced away with old knife (which I thought was sharp) with right hand; after 8 attempts (more or less in same place on rope) gave up, as knife had hardly touched rope. Tried with new (serrated-edge knife) . . . clean  through in one stroke. (Must try again on 10 mm rope, as this was done on 9 mm.)

Gave a presentation, followed by Q&A, about caving to my 8 year old daughter's school class. Mainly concentrated on the clothing and equipment we use, as they are doing a project about sports clothing/equipment design. Took in a load of gear for them to check out. I was the only parent to volunteer.

They seemed to enjoy it and asked a load of interesting questions.

Apparently the next class up is doing a project about sporting champions and they asked if I would go back again to talk about caving!
I told them caving was noncompetitive (mostly!) but they seem to have a very wide definition of what is a champion (you don't have to be really good at something to be a champion!) and suggested I could talk about pioneer cavers who didn't have the gear we have today or people who have achieved something (discovered something?). Also about record caves - longest, deepest, biggest etc.

I actually do wonder if this really is a place for armchair cavers. I have been disappointed by all my forums of late. I am naive enough to think this would be a place for digging reports and cave photos but sadly its seldom the case. So today I need to cut and post another sample to Canada as the one sent a month ago has not arrived yet. I also need to recover physically and mentally from yesterday as it was my 20th caving trip this year and at 66 I feel sometimes that I am doing too much. I wasnt going to go next week but ---But I have nothing better to do.

Well John, I am currently writing a minor article for Descent and a larger one for the DCA N/L. There's a possibility of an article or two for the 'Write it down' bit of Descent, but I'm sure you've got a few of those yourself!

A journal would have limited appeal I'd have thought, although with over 30 years of stories to draw from... hmm, maybe a book?  :-\ I will think about it. Why don't you write one yourself, you've got a vast amount of experience, I'm sure it would be a very interesting read...

Feeling brighter so more positive work today. Yesterday's uphill prodding with a solid crowbar fair wore me out. Made up this lightweight adjustable bar. It has a hardened tip one end and the shorter section slots into the other end to extend the length.

I simply can't believe I managed to fit through it before and particularly back up through it. It looked suicidal! I gave it a really good go and one of the other guys was stuck in it for a good 10 minutes. I took some photos of him so I'm glad he got out or I would have felt really bad.

Hi, mmilner, I just noticed your 'byline' above, but – it's a bit off-topic – did you not come across '1000 metres down' in your formative years?

I remember reading both the books you cite + Cadoux's classic as inspirations to my going caving.

(A bit off-topic inasmuch as it's something I did related to caving 50-odd years ago, rather than today!!!!!)

Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit's annual training/fun event at DeSoto Falls.

Hi Amy, looks like good fun in a spectacular location.

One thing intrigues me – it's always recommended that we use a double pulley (two pulleys in-line, that is) for a Tyrolean to avoid a single one sort of twisting or skewing around, but it seems from your video that a single pulley works perfectly well.

What is the location? Is it a conventional waterfall, or is it a cave entrance (seems to be limestone)?

mmilner: Yes, you're right about the Berger. The book brings home how hard exploration must have been with 1950s' clothing, equipment and lighting, and how 'cushy' we have it these days!

We use 5/8 inch rope and I think those are CMI 2" bushing rescue pulleys - if a spinner were to go you'd still hang by a pin. We experimented in past with a short cowstail type lanyard as a backup safety but it all just gets kerjangled and isn't really needed for our setup anyway. When ya start just face the right direction the carabiner will have you twisted to face (people putting folk on rope take care of that) and no issues with losing speed running against the side. As you can see still sometimes folk bottom out and have to haul themselves in. The biggest thing to worry about with pulleys really is making sure they are working properly (spinning correctly and such). Safe as being on as a stop or bobbin or something =)

The location is DeSoto Falls, which is in a state park here in Northern Alabama. Everything here is karst =) Yes there are caves, but not at this precise location =) Big waterfalls aren't uncommon here. You're on the cumberland plateau, which makes up almost all the caving region in "TAG".

Cut galv scaffold bars for cave dig entrance grill.
Rodded drains at caving Hut.
Load car for digging tonight.
Now run out of distractions from sorting stuff for GG, so I best go digging.

Not quite today but yesterday I took a friend down to a lake in Bristol to watch daubenton's bats flying, and listen to them on a bat detector. No matter how many bats I see in cave I never get board of watching them. There were hundreds about last night all feeding off the moths etc on the lake.

Very good, it does work nicely the ol top loader for smaller lengths. However it doesn't clean clothes too well nowadays. Also doubt it would handle a 200m rope, which I have three of to clean.

Yeah they were, Its a big hole. However they were used on two separate trips, we only need two to drop the first three hundred meters. After that it levels off out to the resurgence. When packing we obviously picked a clean on the second trip instead of taking a muddy one again....

It was canyoning, which is like caving in daylight  ;D

Took a fall leaving my ankle stuck in a crack, made a horrible crack and left me doing a fish out of water impression rolling about on the floor. Manned up and continued about an hour and a half out the canyon, then did a three hour drive back to muscat to go to hospital. Doc said the sound could of been my ankle going back in after dislocation, No fracture he could see but ligament damage so I'm in a cast now.

p.s driving with a cast is hard!

Got to thinking about where opposition from landowners in the CRoW debate may come from, and just how long the lobbying process could take. Had a quick browse of this:

http://www.cla.org.uk/about-cla (http://www.cla.org.uk/about-cla)

The line "The CLA in-house professional advisory team gives unlimited, independent and impartial information on a wide range of issues to members." struck a chord.

I suspect they could give the BCA a very long run for their money.

Well, I have an ancient Warmbac oversuit with half the seams coming undone. But being a cheapskate and trying to eek out another year (or five) from it, I want to see if I can patch it and stitch up any seams that are not too far gone. However, it is full of mud and if I am going to try to mend it, I will have to try to get at least some of the filth out of it (a rare task for me).

As it was bin day today, I had a convenient empty dustbin waiting for me when I got home. That will make an excellent container for dunking the filthy object in, I thought. Picking out a few indescribable items from the bottom of the bin (probably been there for a year or so), I took the bin over to the hosepipe, out in the side passage. I gave it a quick hose down on the inside, and tossed the oversuit in. Followed it with a bit of cheap shampoo, I then commenced half-filling the bin, and selected a bit of 2 by 2 to use as a dunker/stirrer.

I had forgotten that my oversuit is, in fact, red and blue, and not a general pinky-brown colour. Now it is hanging up in the dry, and I can't wait to see how many more trips I can get out of it after careful repair, once dry.

wrote up a bit for the club magazine. mostly moaning about cave related injuries. liked the earlier post about the caving autobiography. there are a few now for caving. started a diving type book a few years ago then my joint author got killed on a wreck he was looking at for me. he was trying to lift a big anchor that was to go in my garden. sort of put me off but all the research and photos are in place. maybe one day. must buy a new oversuit but as my caving future is still uncertain will wait a bit.

Cleaned and hung up to dry a mountain of caving kit from an SRT training course this weekend. Rather pleased with some of the pictures I got too.

Used my SRT gear bolted to the wall on the 3rd floor so that I could chisel a suitable hole for my plumber to install a new boiler - does that count ?

I was looking through old photos and came across this one. It was a random photo I took of the Matlock Raft racein the 70s.  Some yeas later I joined the TSG and turned out that this was a TSG raft and some of the people came my friends in the 80s. Weird coincidence.

Had to do this as an attachment as I cant make  the url from Flickr work.

Is that Bob Grimes on the left?

It is indeed Bob Grimes. Buster by his side and Kieth Joule in front of him. It looks like Dave Watson, formally of Giants Hole, with the grey wooly hat and possibly Chris Rhodes behind him. I can't make out who the others are though.

The "What gear is home-made these days" made me think I'd get out the old sewing machine again. Repair some gear and cobble together a drill cover etc.. Queue the Benny Hill tune; let's just say the results were mixed.

Back to the speedy stitcher for now.

I attended the Yorkshire Dales National Park Management Plan Annual Forum representing cavers on behalf of CNCC.  The new plan for 2019-2024 was launched which is a fairly concise 20 page document and far different to the lengthy policy docs that have gone before.

Listed among the Special Qualities of the Park is says, "The most extensive caving area in the UK, including the longest cave system in the UK, the Three Counties System, and one of the largest Caverns and highest unbroken underground waterfalls in the UK at Gaping Gill."

Due to the response to the public consultation last year and further engagement by CNCC the profile of caving has been raised and the perceived value of our caves increased.  Although no specific objective has been set for the caves there has been an acknowledgement to improve the interpretation of caves and education of the visiting non-caving public.  I'm looking forward to helping achieve those aims.

Well yesterday morning really.  I was interviewed on BBC Radio York.  Cave rescue put them onto us to talk about the joys of caving in the Dales  (there are many). They didn't want the public to get the impression caving was all about rescue services.  Well done them and I hope I did a good job.

Had an on-site meeting in Barbondale this morning with landowner agent in the middle of a blizzard.  Sorting out a small conflict of interest between a number of parties including cavers and a shooting syndicate.  Good sense prevailed and an amicable solution found.  CNCC will be issuing some advice before the shooting season starts.

A follow up meeting continued discussions on future arrangements for Leck Fell.

As we say here at CNCC - Working together for northern caving.  Come and join us

We detackled our dig.  Spent the last few months down Marble Steps pursuing the dream. Unfortunately it ended like this.  The rock on the near right is about the sizeof a tangerine.   :(

Experimenting with Milliputt Putty

Organising next digging trips. Hopefully. One is a climbing job up about 30m.   Another a new dig in a stream sink in a cave.

Emails re conservation project possibly to be filmed at Fairy Cave Quarry.

Thinking about what to do next at Vurley.

Maybe I am sad but its a dull old day here at the rest home.
