    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

I think it's quite simple really - isnt it simply about "respect" ?

Respect for the cave - and respect for the other people who use the cave ?  Every single caver i know subscribes to this way of thinking.

Another worrying part of this is the incidents of vandalism like the recent damage at trats temple.

I'm not one to make assumptions either - but lack of respect for the cave/other cavers in one way (e.g. littering) is likely to represent a character who is disrespectful in other ways (vandalism - somewhat more permanent)

I really worry that there are characters who are starting to frequent the cave who really feel like they can get away with anything.

As our original poster pointed out - at the time he didnt know whether to confront them or not (and we all agree - you shouldnt just assume that someone is the culprit based on appearances).  But - by the same token - those responsible for littering/damage/etc may feel that nobody is likely to confront them unless actually caught in the act!  I'm sure we were all naughty at some point when we were younger - the more you feel like you can get away with - the more you try it on !  That is - until you get caught - and get a proper bollocking for it.

Is the concensus that we have 1 group of individuals responsible for a recent spate of litter/damage/etc ?

Or are there (more depressingly) an increasing number of groups who are deciding to do these things ?

Also - has anyone considered that alleged culprits may be reading this forum.....  :-\

No smoking in public places is great! Nothing worse than sitting in a pub and hardly being able to breathe. And when you get up in the morning you and smell the clothes you wore the day before you just can't believe how much they stink.....

-------

My opinion is that drugs and caving don't mix. When I go underground I trust my life to the people I cave with (if I was to get injured etc) and I seriously don't think that them being high would give me a better chance of surviving in a worst case scenario.

well if there polluting the cave then yeh maybe :)
would depend on why there is a cause of smoke i supose coz if there using a match to test for bad air or for the breez in what direction of the cave than that should be ok but diliberatly causing smoke then they shud be fired by the firering squad

I THINK the law will be that any place that serves food of any kind (as in chip-meals crisps etc don't count) will not allow smoking, don't quote me on that but my mate works in a restaurant and he seems to think that will be the first steps.

The act of parliament is quite specific and as we are in Britain I'm sure it will be implemented fully by our bureaucratic jobs worth enforcement agencies and government.

The act can be viewed online here:

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2006/60028--b.htm#2

The relevant section of the act is here:

2    Smoke-free premises

      (1) Premises are smoke-free if they are open to the public.

But unless the premises also fall within subsection (2), they are smoke-free only when open to the public.
      (2) Premises are smoke-free if they are used as a place of work-

So if a caving instructor is in a cave on a job smoking is forbidden. However is caving a premise or outdoors?

Smoking could still be banned at certain outdoor locations that are 'substantially enclosed', such as football grounds and railway platforms.

Back in the 1960's a bunch of us went down GG on the winch and took some acid in sand caverns.  It was bizarre but I did discover that stals don't hold interesting conversations.  I was still out of it on the way back up Main Shaft.  Not to be recommended, especially as I think I emitted a girly scream at one point, which echoed deafeningly.  No I don't condone the taking of drugs underground.
