Cussey Pot, Eyam
« on: September 07, 2020, 09:23:40 am »
The Eldon's lockdown project, this cave in Eyam has been a welcome change of scene from the depths of Intake Dale Mine and has provided us with some "easy" results.

Originally spotted due to the trees shaking with the massive draught firing out, a single trip opened it up and dropped us into an 80m long rift cave with plenty of draughting digs leading off. After tasting a few we settled on one and got to work. 7 trips later the results are now pouring in.

The weekly trip reports are written up on the Eldon website, and we hope to keep them as exciting as the last few have been:

Great stuff, now we have two Stemples of Doom around the village.

Any idea where this fits in with other stuff yet?

Why the name Cussey? Given the draught does a disappearing act then Cussed seems more suitable.

The name is the from rake that it is located on, which is marked on a few old maps (although with very few details about mining activity). There's no evidence of mining in any of it so far, other than at the very bottom where a few clues are starting to reveal themselves....

Thanks for the info.

If I may ask - and without giving away too much info. - roughly where is it?

On Cussey Rake  ;)

But to be potentially more helpful, it's nearly above "Doom"

Is there an obvious industrial explanation for the intermittent nature of the draught??

I wonder if the Old Ruminator has seen this. The scaffolding supports rival those in Vurley Swallet although we are trying hard with our new dig. At least we aren't the only diggers  pretending not to have a death wish!

Funnily enough I was pondering that too. I wonder if the outside temperature is making the difference. This "summer" we've had both unseasonably hot and unseasonably cool.

The bottom of Cussey is already below Doom, at the same level as the Boil-Up!

Not sure how we've managed to miss Doom so far...

Soooo...... as one "not in the know" I infer that you are near to connecting to a natural system somewhere under Eyam the name of which is an anagram of "Mood".

It's no secret that there are large sections of natural cave deep under Eyam that have been accessed through various routes (which ideally i don't want discussed or published online). Nor any secret that in 2012 a big section of cave&mine was found that was named Doom, which has proved to be part of the missing link between Hungerhill and Carlswark.

Thanks for that - yet more evidence of how much big natural is under the surface but sealed off by glacial debris chokes and the like.

Are people allowed into Cussey Pot at the moment? Don't want to go in if the finders don't want people in there right now.

Really interested to have a look!

Cussey is on private land and no formal agreement has been negotiated as yet, so please stay away for the time being,

Thanks

The trip we’ve been working towards since last June has finally arrived. After over 40 trips, through bravery, ignorance and stupidity, driven on only by the appetite for glory and reliable pre-beers, last night we connected Cussey Pot to Doom. Great work team.
