Caving book ideas for christmas
« on: October 28, 2021, 12:14:43 pm »
I cave a lot in the peak district and with Christmas coming im keen to ask for more books. what would you recommend. obvs I have COPD.

why isn't there anything as nice as mendips underground for the peak district? or is there and I haven't seen it yet.

I also have the adventures of another pooh which is an amazing read, so any other recommendations like that.

I would say mendip underground is actually a very good book, unfortunately currently out of print I believe, unless one of the caving clubs in mendips still have stashed away for sale.

I appreciate the plug Sam, but sadly I sold the last copies in April - it's now officially sold out. Though there is a copy on eBay currently. I do have three of these left, though probably too specific to be of interest to cavers:

Not peak related, but Jim Eyre's books would make a brilliant gift for any caver who hasn't got them already and currently on offer from Wild Places: https://www.wildplaces.co.uk/jim-eyre-books.html

While in my view, Jim isn't a world-class writer and some of his descriptions and writing style are a little clunky and not very "polished", the stories he tells more than make up for that! His illustrations are also hilarious and add another dimension to many of his tales. An absolute must-read for any caver.

I'm not saying to buy them from Amazon, but it's a handy way of listing the books:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Books-James-Rieuwerts/s?rh=n%3A266239%2Cp_27%3AJames+Rieuwerts
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are missing!

Hmm, 'Adventurers' is almost double the list price on Amazon. So there you go :)

  • It's not Peak District
  • It's not caving
  • It's not even a real physical book :(  (sadly I don't know any way to get it except Kindle edition)
So this doesn't tick any of your boxes, but... a very left-field suggestion

If you are interested in background history then Jim Puttrell Pioneer Climber & Cave Explorer by J P Craddock ISBN 978 1848761-803 is a good read. Not sure where you would get a copy from though.

I'll second that suggestion. You could email the publishers via: books@troubador.com or give 'em a call on 0116 279 2299.

Their website is:  https://www.troubador.co.uk/matador/  Looks like a self publishing outfit, so they should at least be able to get a message to the author and ask him to contact you.

£50 at:

Presumably the mining museum at Matlock have some options...

It's not worth £50 - not for the info in it that's useful. From a Peak District Caving perspective I was quite disappointed, and there are better sources of info out there, but it would involve some effort. It's definitely out of print though, so depends how desperate you are, I guess!

I'd like a copy of Craddock's book about Jim Puttrell. Sounds like I'm not the only one. Maybe time for a reprint?

Looking at the publisher's website, you need to lobby the author rather than them (northants):

I don't know if it's actually available, but the physical book is still being advertised by the publisher Delfryn Publications on their website https://www.delfrynpublications.co.uk/store.php?v=19 at £10.

Disclaimer: Although the publisher's website has a review of the book that I originally wrote for the Welsh Mines Society Newsletter, I have no connection with the publisher other than receiving a free review copy.

Beneath the Mountains, by me and Richard Gregson, is really jolly good.

It is.

It's a highly readable and humorous account of expedition life in Northern Spain in the 80s.

For something a little different ... I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of John Gillett's excellent books. "Sixty Years of Caves and Caving", "A Bedside Book for Older Cavers", "North Bucks Yokel" etc.
Old ... but not old enough to know any better
