Sorry Mr Whiterock! Knowing your sphere of interest obviously helps but I do vaguely recognise the scaffolding (and the rubbish unfortunately).

Don't have time to dig out a photo now but should be able to post something later tonight or tomorrow.

My interests now include new areas on the east bank. As long as the promised storms aren't too bad I'll be up at Pen Ffordd Goch tomorrow on a 400 mile day trip looking at surface landforms, maybe I should take a couple of bent coat hangers with me to help me solve a "Mystery"

For what it is worth I do think Lasgarn Quarry Cave is part of the bigger system, although maybe now isolated by erosion. There was a distinct cool draught coming out of it last June and July, hinting that there is some further passage still connected to it. Incidentally, a number of sites south east of Blaenavon had begun sucking in air a few weeks ago.

.

Try this. An easy one I think.

Graigwen - The last time I was at Jackdaw Quarry Cave, it was draughting inwards too. I sprayed canned smoke in the final dig/crawl to the shaft, back out towards the entrance and it reversed quickly, blew through the crawl but went up the shaft, into the boulders above towards the surface, not down the shaft, even though there was water falling.

Pwll Dwfn?

Not Pwll Dwfn.  The SRT kit was a bit over the top for going down and up what ws really a very short bit of rope.
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: Minion on June 23, 2017, 10:22:36 pm
North West Inlet, Craig Y Ffynnon?

The short bit of rope you're referring to I think may be the rope up the short scramble to the second choke.

Not Craig-Y-ffynnon.  Wrong end of the Brecons.
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: Huge on June 24, 2017, 09:25:08 am
I thought I recognised the passage but the SRT kit confused me so now I'm going with my original thought of Ogof Pasg.

Agree with Huge that it looks like the short canal section in Ogof Pasg, in which case SRT kit would have been a massive waste of time (and tricky through the following duck and squeeze).
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: shortscotsman on June 24, 2017, 01:05:53 pm
Huge has it.

It is Ogof Pasg.  the pool before the canal was sumped so I was playing with my kit on the (very short) rope up.

To avoid being overly tedious, and to move it along to, presumably, a more interesting photo by the next victim contributor, it's behind this:

It's Hafna mine ....

I suspected it was when I first saw it and nearly answered (tall "slit" entrance is the only one I know) but the "Lock" seemed wrong since Dave T didn't seem to recognise (and I know he would) I thought it was probably a different one. Couldn't think of any other "gates" that look like that in the Gwydwr forest ....

Not Ffynnon Taff.

This is obviously harder than I thought it would be. It's somewhere most people will have been to and lots of people photograph, just not usually this section of the passage.

Not Craig A Ffynnon either.

I'll narrow down the geographical area. It's South Wales, in the main part of the Northern Outcrop (so not Southern Outcrop, Gower or West Wales) and West of the Taff.

Draenen is East of the Taff Wiltonp, so not there.

Long Drop has it, even if it was a random guess! The Chapel in Pant Mawr Pot, after the steep calcite ramp but before the finely decorated end chamber. A fairly distinctive piece of passage?

Apologies for delay: I had to create an Imageshack account.

It's in a Welsh cave and it is not an obscure location - this is a shot on a reasonably well travelled route, and the bod in the photo is mid-move rather than posed bizarrely in an artificial position or artificial location.

Waterfall in Bridge Cave before it collapsed?
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: robjones on July 15, 2017, 12:23:27 am
Allan is correct: it is the top of the scramble down into Arete Chamber from the small passage at the top of Chasm Passage, accessed via a slightly tricky climb (on which there used to be a fixed rope) above the corkscrew slither down through boulders on the descent from the Wedding Cake to Salubrious Streamway. The photo (1988 - note the Oldham and TSA suit) was taken following rain, hence the somewhat wet conditions though these are not unusual in the least. From the stance shown, the figure pivoted right onto the large block to scramble down further blocks. The base of the scramble can also be reached by descending through the corkscrew slither down through boulders mentioned above, crossing over Salubrious Streamway and scrambling up through boulders on the far side and along a passage with further boulder scrambles.

Long Drop - thanks for the feedback.

Over to you Allan...

not ogof cefn-y-gist. Your getting colder now...

Cefn-y-Gist is a wonderful trip on a hot summers day. You squirm along in a warm stream draining off the peat avoiding touching the supporting scaffolding till it enlarges. Some nice formations in a Bink's passage.

Crystals, boulders and tape. Pretty obvious it was Draenen!   ;D

Maybe we should try to target in on the location in such a large system? Maybe the exact location needs to be guessed with any cave of a reasonable size?

Midwinter Chambers?

I figured that it was very likely to be in wiltonp's Draenen period but didn't know the location so kept quiet. So saying that,  I agree if it's a big system, let's go for cave and location.

Was reasonably obvious to be Draenen
Back when carbide was the norm for long digging trips before LEDs kicked off!

Very close with Midwinter Chambers but it is more obscure than that. It is so close though, I think it has to be accepted. It is actually Hexamine Highways and is immediately off the bottom of Midwinters.

It is. Although I believe it's been replaced with a new one and a new copy of the music.

I hope it is a better tune. Here is the music stand in 1970.

Ian

On 27th January 1967 and one other occasion, Jimi Hendrix Experience performed in Chislehurst Caves. Supposedly also Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones (fairly local) and David Bowie (very local) among others.

....of course it is really just a chalk mine not a natural cave.

I think I know where it is and the cave is visited far more frequently than Draenen but I'm not sure as the location looks different to how I remember it so will wait to see what others think.

Not exactly, but it reminded me of an obscure side passage in which I contrived to almost drown myself in 1974 on a solo trip while emotionally distraught over the death of my wife, I was trying to free dive a sump which was about two foot long.

I'll post the next photo when I get back from work this evening.

Is it the low, wet passage that goes off from the pool at the top end of The Creek? There's a climb at the end, up into the bedding passage above, that you can also climb up to without crossing the pool.

Think it is called the Sewer that leads from the toilet isn't it?
There is a hole down just before the climb down and that leads to a crawl in the stream which pops out after 5 yards or so into the pool at the bottom of the climb.

Think it is the same place as the picture below
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: mudman on August 01, 2017, 04:57:42 pm
In the passage that leads around to the right from the White Horse Pool, there is a hole down that leads to a wet crawl that pops out in the small pool just a few feet on. The Rat Trap I believe it is called. Usually great fun to tell someone that hasn't been there before that it is the way on and get them to 'go first' then nip round to meet them coming out the other end.
I don't think your photo is the place wiltonp, too large I think.
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit

same place. The picture was taken from the far side of the pool looking back into the passage.
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: Huge on August 01, 2017, 05:34:08 pm
I think we're all talking about the same place! It seems there are different nicknames for certain features in the cave, probably given by instructors leading groups to enliven the experience. I've heard the hole down to the wet passage being called the Toilet Pan  or Lavatory Pan.

By the Great Oxbow do you mean the Upper Oxbow?

Great Oxbow is the dry loop on the streamway through trip between OFD 2 and Cwmdwr, midway between Maypole Inlet and Marble Showers; the Great Oxbow bypasses a couple of sumps in the main streamway. It is nowhere terribly far above the main stream and its sumps.

No one has the correct cave yet but right end of the Beacons.

Trig - thanks for complement! Image was chosen less for any artistic merit and instead mainly to make this Wezzit a bit more stretching than some previous ones which have been identified in a few hours.

One small clue: this entire film (yep - its an old shot) developed browner than the passages appear in real life for some reason.

To determine whether these most recent suggestions are random guesses or informed identifications, which part of the cave that you named was the photo taken in?   :-\

Many previous wezzits have only lasted a few hours so it seems worth seeking a degree of exactness to stretch things out a little bit so ensure we don't all run out of photos within a few months!    :ang:

Damo - you have it!   :)

After the bouldery entrance passage there is a junction: the Rabbit Hole goes off left and the main passage continues right, initially with a flat floor (where the photo was taken) and soon becomes bouldery again with small scrambles up and down, until the roof lowers at the short crawl to the pitch head.

Reminds me of Ogof Pasg, between the base of the pith and the sump/duck but I'm struggling to remember such a nice curtain there.  :-\

It is also reminiscent of some passages in the further end of Ogof Foel Fawr, if instead of doing the connection to Ogof Pasg, you continue southwards to a fairly lengthy series of dead ends.   :doubt:

Its a good photo by the way.  :)

You gave the game away when you quoted a length and that it was in Carmarthenshire.  The 1995 edition of Caves of South Wales gave the answer.
I don't have any suitable photos, anybody else want to take over?

I was in two minds about going for that one Chunky but I missed out on the Nant Hyfryd one, which I had a vague feeling about. It's probably cheating, having been one of the first three people to enter 6th Heaven Chamber! The one and only time I've ever been there.

I'll see what I can find, photo wise. The problem is that I'm friends on Facebook with half the people guessing on this thread so they've all seen my photos already.

I think that is Huge's clue.  Siambre Ddu is an interesting place where in due course a caprock collapse doline will appear but at the moment the upwards stoping from Siambre Ddu passage in Ogof Draenen has only reached the base of the Twrch sandstone at the bottom of the Marros Group (formerly Millstone Grit).  The floor of the chamber lies below the original level of the limestone:Marros Group contact, littered with blocks of the Marros Group. There is said to be 6m of the Marros Group above the ceiling (this sounds about right) so it is not going to reach the surface soon. An interesting survey of the area can be seen at https://www.researchgate.net/figure/49402851_fig3_Fig-3-Simplified-survey-of-part-of-the-Ogof-Draenen-cave-system-showing-the-collapsed (https://www.researchgate.net/figure/49402851_fig3_Fig-3-Simplified-survey-of-part-of-the-Ogof-Draenen-cave-system-showing-the-collapsed) .

I have not been to Ogof Dwy Sir myself and only added it to my "to do" list a couple of weeks ago. Queen of Hearts chamber sounds similar as it is a large gritstone collapse chamber, but Andy Farrant and Mike Simms in their 2011 paper interpreted it as a paleokarst channel cut into the limestone in Namurian times and infilled with Twrch Sandstone, with most of the collapse occurring much later.

Yes, I would guess there are plenty of caves to the north developed under gritstone cover, such as Chartist cave and the upper part of Crescent Cave, but I am sorry to say they are all outside my direct knowledge.

Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: Huge on August 25, 2017, 08:59:58 pm
You've got it Minion, Ogof Mynydd Llangynidr. A guess or was there something that led you there?

A bit obscure but other photos have gone quite quickly recently. I wouldn't be surprised if the total number of people who have been in there is in single digits as it's spent most of the time since it's discovery in 1968/69 with a collapsed entrance!

The clue - This cave doesn't conform to the usual method of development, refers to the cave being developed at the contact between the top of the Dowlais Limestone and the overlying Twrch Sandstone of the Marros Group (what used to be called the Millstone Grit), which, I think I'm right in saying, is an unconformity, i.e. there are beds laid down between the top of the Dowlais and the Twrch Sandstone further West, which are missing here.

Looking at the clue.. Is that up in the millstone grit? Looks red and quite grainy. Stoping from solutional limestone voids upwards?

Bang on, there's absolutely no limestone visible in the photo!

More people have walked on the Moon....etc

Truly obscure, although getting a mention in books and online maps. I suppose Minion is now looking for something even more obscure.

There are large areas up on Mynydd Llangynidr where the Namurian Grits have "foundered" downward owing to solution in the limestone below - not just dolines but whole areas. The prospects are more theoretical than practical for decent human sized caves, with lots of shattered rock and infill.

Is it the crystal bit off the route up to the left, just before you reach the boulder choke connecting to Jigsaw passage?
You come out of the Daren crawl, clamber over boulders at a 30 degree angle near the route of the telephone wire, and can go left to see this or right to see chunky white stalagmites.

Edit: I think I'm referring to what is at The Cascade on the survey.

wiltonp has it, bang on! The isolated section of cracked mud floor, between Cairn Junction and the base of Big Bang Pitch, about 2 minutes from the log book.

Long Drop might be kicking himself after having the first couple of guesses, as him, me and Dark Reef, who's in the photo, were part of the first group of people to walk through there!

Here's another shot, in colour.

Over to you Peter.

That's why it's called Bolder Land! 😊

(And before I could say that I had to look up Ogof Tir-dyweunydd on the Cambrian Cave Registry, it is very obscure for a 2.5km long cave.)

And the clue.......

Thats unfortunately all it is and as far as I could get:-(
but it does meet the definition of a cave and is known.

It does look wet, although Ray Bloody Purchase doesn't look too bloody bothered about it. Coast wise and wet, not sure. Ray BP does have a wetsuit, so must be reasonably sized to bother putting one on. Got to be Wye, Gower or Pembroke.

It's quite a chunky bit of limestone that, none of your thinly bedded rubbsish.

I don't understand the difference.    When I built a php thing much like a forum, a user could enter html and it (most tags anyway) would get rendered as expected.
Looking at the quote before I remove photo suggests the difference is you have used square brackets whist I've been using normal greater than and less than.      If thats what makes it work - weird man.

It's a big, dryish looking passage with a lot of calcite. The fellah on the right appears to have a bit of rope around his neck. Rock possibly reddish? Difficult to say with film from a couple of decades ago. I'm wondering a limestone based S Wales iron mine. The only one I've heard of (without internet investigation) is Garth. I get a miney vibe though.

I think you may be right about the miney vibe Robin. Sure I've seen photos somewhere similar.  Draethen Roman Mine I'm thinking.  I can't be sure add I've never been in there and there is no access at the moment so unlikely to either.

So I'll go with Draethen Romsn Lead mine

I do hope you lot will keep posting pictures of inlets in Draenen as they are of great interest to me as I am trapped in Kent with two non-functioning legs and unlikely to get down to Wales before 2018.  :)

It was a guess, I'd honestly forgotten that you'd been that way recently. I didn't recognise it but thought it had a Draenen inlet feel about it. My next guess would have been Blorens Inlet!

As you couldn't load a pic within the limit, but a smaller one would, it sounds like your internet connection might have been dropping out.

It is OFD 1.

Can you be more specific Rob?
Title: Re: Welsh Wezzit
Post by: robjones on December 16, 2017, 03:31:32 pm
My identification was based on a belief that it is one of the inlet tube upwards from the main stream (where the person is standing) to Flood Passage (the usual dry entry route and former showcave). Not sure which tube as they rather seem to look very similar to each other and when I've ascended them I've never known which one I was in or precisely where I'd pop out! From the cobbles in the foreground I assume its close to the downstream sump.

However, if its the tube up from the isolated accessible length of streamway immediately before mthe final downstream sump, up to Gothic Passage, then I've not been there and my identification can't really count, as I've only just now identified that from the survey - perhaps I should have a look next time I'm in the cave as I didn't know of it / had forgotten about it, and have up until now always mistakenly assumed that the sump below Flood Passage was the final downstream sump.

The carbide failed on the way down Main Passage to photographs selenite needle and examine the varves at the Cliffs of Dover.https://www.flickr.com/photos/11409438@N06/4906786237/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/11409438@N06/4906786237/) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/11409438@N06/4906786237/)Of course I had backup - a Nife cell. Somewhere down Main Stream Passage the main bulb was barely illuminating the walls, switching to pilot bulb the last faint yellow glow faded as I got back near the junction with Main Passage. Exiting was surprisingly easy as wet boot prints from four or five hours earlier indicated the route. I did not need to use the three remaining flash bulbs or the three wind-proof matches and striker inside my helmet. There was another party deep in the cave so my main worry was potential embarrassment at being found sitting in the dark near the entrance.

.

Blimey, that beats Huge and I ended up doing a large part of the Upper Oxbow Series in OFD2 on a single failing maglite.  :-[

There was another party deep in the cave so my main worry was potential embarrassment at being found sitting in the dark near the entrance.

.

Carlyle Spedding would of been proud of you.  :)

Ahhh, the good old days. Who needs a zillion-megawatt LED when you can cave on a carbide-striker spark?

Is that the climb down in Draenen entrance series, just before Cairn (can't remember the name, if it even has one...)

I generally refer to it as "why isn't there a fixed ladder here..."

I refer to it as "Yorkshire cavers would probably call this a pitch and rebelay it 3 times"

Afraid not.
Nice cave though with an entertaining entrance. Short entrance series that sometimes feels like the Darren entrance crawls!

Please, someone, suggest that series going up right from the GNR, I can't quite remember the name... always reminds me of a feature of the Cuillins on Skye...  (I don't want to guess cos I've got no pics.)

You mean the one that is rather "Inaccessible"?

Somebody who has actually been there should post the answer.

Long Drop knows the answer, on the basis of his earlier post. I know the answer but have never been there so don't feel I should post.

If Long Drop is short of an obscure photo I can probably loan him one...

Shall we assume that Wilton P is not playing anymore? So I'd suggest Long Drop, Graigwen or Praha (as they've guessed or know where it is) post up the next photo.

(FWIW I think the previous mystery photo was of the Pinnacle Series in DyO, although not 100% certain.  Will try and prod Wilton P into confirming one way or the other.)

Kinda but then you keep going, through a squeeze and then pop out into that chamber (If you can call it that) with this 5 ish metre awkward drop before it ends in a short degenerating passage
