There will be a photographic workshop run during the upcoming cavefest event in the Mendips, hopefully a great opportunity for people to get some shots whilst having a fun and social weekends caving!

If anyone would like to attend this please register your interest on this thread.

Also there may be a possibility of running workshops in South Wales and/or The Dales.
I would be glad to hear from anyone for whom these locations may be of interest.

I am assuming that the exhibition will run a while. Could the organisers give some thought to promoting caving as a sport/hobby ? Contact details etc etc.

Please can the entries be left on dispaly for a longer time?
We're not all in Mendip every couple of weeks.

I think that is the idea Laurie. There should be lots of Summer visitors to Cheddar Gorge so the Exhibition will be seen by a lot more folk than it ever was at Wells Museum with restricted parking and sometimes unpredictable hours. Perhaps there is too much emphasis on the word " Competition" . ( as per thread header ). That purely stated might put entrants off. I shall put in 5 without the hope of a rosette or gold cup as I hope other less " professional " cave photographers will do. Well done on the two categories organisers. We can have a bit of fun with " People in Caving ". The old TG2 will be firing away between now and then. ( beware ).

Well as I am judging I shall not be winning any rosette or gold cup either, but will most certainly be entering 5 of my own just for the joy of getting the chance to show off some of my shots and you never know perhaps  even tempt a muggle underground  ;)

I certainly hope a LOT of other photographers will do the same this year.

Hello, don't do Facebook soooo  a couple of questions: What size should the prints be?  Is there a max / min limit?  Does it have to be a digital print?

Hello, don't do Facebook soooo  a couple of questions: What size should the prints be?  Is there a max / min limit?  Does it have to be a digital print?
I believe digital print is only required if using D H James service to print and mount.

Prints should be A4 size with a plain white border for display. Submitted with your prints should be your information and the category entered.

A total of 5 prints may be submitted per entrant.

Most of the information is on Judi's post above and hopefully Peter will offer other means of contacting him outside of Facebook for those who do not use it.

For now any questions on here I'll try to answer and anything I can't I'll try to find out.

Thanks, one final question: is hand tinting allowed?  Presumably it is as RAW, Photoshop and Lightroom and other computery devices are implicitly allowed as well.  OK, another final question: who would one post physical papery stuff to?

No Chard at all is too much for me. It is the highest town in Somerset you know. Still the Glanvill has a cosy nest on the outskirts. Must rush.
Meeting him just after nine as its the Tuesday Diggers day out.

Clarification

Drop off for Hard Copy Prints (max A4 size) can be posted to or delivered to either:
Peter GlanVill
The Gables,
Touchstone Close,
Chard,
TA20 1QZ
Pete's email is:  pglanv at aol dot com
or
Martin Grass
email first please:  m dot grass at btinternet dot com

Contact detail for both are in Decent page 3
Please do not drop prints off at Gough's Cave, (Cheddar Gorge & Caves) as there is no agreed process of how to get them to the organising committee.

Printing
If you are not printing your own images then after the submission date - Sunday 20th May 2018 at Midnight. - we will go to our sponsor DH James Ltd Photographic Suppliers of Wells and get them all printed at the same time at a nominal fee which we will ask the entrant for. Previously £4 per print. (depends on numbers)
The discounted price is for the bulk printing of photo's not individual prints. Apologies if anyone misunderstood this. Please do use them yourself but expect to pay the normal prices as displayed.

The question from ZombieCake - is hand tinting allowed?  Yes as I am sure the digital prints will be 'enhanced' by software either in the camera or separate application.
As The Old Ruminator pointed out on the https://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=23278.0 (https://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=23278.0) thread what one person likes is not always someone else's cup of tea  :alien:

Hope I have answered all of your questions so far  ;D

before that i should probably get round to getting a case and a new lens for it. Can anyone suggest a suitable general purpose/cave lens for a Nikon that i might be able to find on fleabay for not a huge amount of money

Short notice I know, but a few of us (Assuming the beast from the east 3 allows ;) ) will be heading up to the Dales over the easter weekend.

I will be doing trips with Dudley CC but we are small groups so if any other photographers fancied coming along you'd be more than welcome.
We haven't really planned anything yet but our trips are mostly around 6hrs with a couple of photos en route.

If interested send me a message any time up to Thursday, after this I may or may not have signal.

What a shame we have so few . We have a great chance to show the public the hidden wonders of Mendip at a new venue at Cheddar. If folk worry about the competitive side just think of it as an exhibition. Same old story. Use it or lose it.

Some real cavers somewhere on Mendip.

Not for me to say really but the event closes on Sat 30th June. However Gough's management might keep some items on a longer basis more reflecting local caves rather than the foreign cave posters they have up at present.
Visitors please dont forget to make comment in the visitors book and use a public vote.

Yes, You don't have to visit the cave to see them although an advantage for the exhibition is that cave visitors exit throgh the room where they are displayed. PS Don't spill your take away Costa's on them! :)

My Fairy Cave Quarry photo collage at the Exhibition. Not too close. Dont want to spoil things for visitors.

I think many of the comments in the visitor's book related to Gough's Cave rather than the photos. Never mind.

Title: Re: Mendip Cave Photography Competition 2018 Official Thread
Post by: The Old Ruminator on June 13, 2018, 08:30:47 am
The book gets left open on the table so visitors exiting the cave dont see the cover. Not much you can do about that. Personally I would have liked to see more exhibition. Things to lead non cavers into the hobby. Club contact details even professional points of entry. I think mine was the only non competition exhibit which is a shame. There was certainly enough room for much more information. OK even a little about this forum on a poster. If anything we have wasted a good opportunity in introducing more people into the hobby. That is not to criticise any of the organisers. Next time a slight change of remit might be good if we want to popularise caving.
Its odd really. I got slagged off on another forum by people criticising the dangerous sport of caving where " hundreds of people die ". The Wiki stats do suggest that but go back to 1929 worldwide. Also the old thing about " putting public services at risk " when they have to rescue you. These concepts appear often in the minds of non cavers ( oh the horrible mud ) . We certainly do not do enough to address that.

Oh no I will be 71 then. Much too old to front up anything like the exciting world of caves.

Went to Wookey Hole today. That was exciting enough  but the 5 year old grandson was not impressed. I did manage to keep mum during the entire cave trip though.

Maybe some photos later on another thread.

Peter you do a grand job and my comments are not any criticism of you.
Darn. That's my chance of getting a prize out of the window.

Jane any chance of getting one of your posters down to Martin or Peter to put up in the exhibition hall?

You will have to ask Cheddar Caves about putting them up. They seem a little picky about what goes up but it does sound like a very good idea.

Getting on with something a bit different for the exhibition. Had to have the job done in Berlin but so far it looks good to me.

Finally got to the exhibition at the weekend and couldn't come away without commenting on your fab 2 part poster set.

Must have been a lot of work gone in to producing it TOR. It really is a great addition and a wonderful photographic record two great mendip caves. Thanks for sharing

Note that the exhibition closes each day at 4pm, as we found out this afternoon. Fortunately one of the staff very kindly unlocked the door for us.   :)

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition, there were a lot of super shots this year. Congratulations not just to those that won something but to all those who displayed their work. I was sorry not to be able to be there, but was busy exploring and taking photo's myself.

Again thank you so much to Ukcaving, Starless River, Warmbac, D H Lawrence and Peli for their constant support for all things caving.
