Cave locations

On the other tack, I was a bit surprised to see how little cave has been mentioned as being quarried away.  Somehow I thought there would have been much more than that.

In similar vein, when driving past the west Mendip quarries I wonder why more cave hasn't been exposed by them.

The only specific example I can think of is Fairy Cave Quarry where the quarry intercepted a substantial cave system draining to St Dunstan's Well.  According to the Cerberus book on the caves, 4575 m of cave had been found up to 1976 and about 840 m lost to quarrying.  A major part of the well decorated Balch Cave was removed but with recent discoveries, the sum total of lengths of the remaining parts now exceeds the original length of the cave.
I think there's a similarly named hole in Weardale; Fairy Holes, if memory serves me right that has lost about 600m.

yes - Peter Ryder was talking about it at Hidden Earth

Wasn't there some of Sidetrack cave in Eldon quarry lost to quarrying? I think I've red some where that the it was the quarrying that found it.
There is also Hole in the wall cave in Horse shoe quarry (furnace quarry) not shore if that was found by quarrying too.

That was Alsops that was lost in Eldon Quarry and was part of the same cave as Sidetrack. There was also Nervous Breakdown discovered by Orpheus in the early 80s but that was quarried away or burried. There is now Convenience Cave discovered only a few months ago. All of these were probably part of the same system before being intersected by quarrying.  Maybe if the hill hadnt be quarried away, we may never have found these caves....?

Alas, both Sidetrack and Convenience are NO GO at the moment due to access issues. Please respect this!
