I would like to win a copy of Duncan's book otherwise I'll have to buy it.
If I have to buy it I won't be able to afford my budget trip to Greece.
If I don't go to Greece then the loss of revenue will probably make them default on their IMF repayment, causing the Germans and their new BFF's France to go marching into Athens, armed to the teeth.
If the Germans attack Greece, Russia will probably open up the Eastern Front again and head for Berlin.
With the Russkis on a jolly in Germany, the Yanks will probably nuke Moscow.
Not wishing to appear self centered, but I don't want the burden of starting WW3 on my shoulders, so to keep world peace, the only sensible option would be to let me win the book.  ;)

Here in the Dudley Caving Club we are in awe of skill and heroism of the cave divers. We have non of that fancy equipment, air cylinders, fluorescent coloured dry suites, bright flippers and no idea where to start. We would love to win Duncan's book because we would love to learn from an expert, read his tales of adventure and exploration of places we can only dream of going.

When we meet sumps all we can do at the moment is to hold our breath, dive in and hope we make it to the other side...

I don't want to win a copy of Duncan's book because I don't need any reminders of what a miserable activity cave diving can be.  However, if I did win it means there will be one less book in circulation & therefore one less person will get to read about the embarrassing antics of a young & overly enthusiastic forerunner of me.....  If I had the energy I'd burn every copy ;-)

This book is required reading for anyone who wants to know THE TRUTH about Joel Corrigan - especially the "Joel's Squeeze" incident on p.62.

I would like to win Duncan's book because............

It tells a tale of darker places,
Far removed from the world's rat races.

I've often wondered what's beyond the sump,
Would diving be the obvious jump?

Tales to be told of worry and strife,
Tangled in line, where's the knife?

One third in, one third out,
One third left to sort it all out.

Nice clear viz as you head on in,
But it's gone to bat s**t as soon as you fin.

Is it left or is it right,
Page 62, this seems tight?

Service the regs, it needs a grommet,
Here we go, where's me wallet?

The kit's not heavy when you're in the water,
But to get it there you'll need a porter.

Take good care of your porter,
You don't want them shouting out for a doctor.

I think on balance, I'll read the book,
And never need to take a look.

Reminds me not to be a cave diver,
And if I win, it's less than a fiver.

There's a much better book for reading in the bath - or underwater as it is printed on waterproof paper.

Well done Duncan for writing this book.  I wish more cavers would write about their adventures underground as, I for one, like to read about them.  Climbers seem to pen a book on every epic going but so many caving adventures go unpublished.  It begs the question of whether cavers are fundamentally different to climbers in this respect, or whether our adventures just aren't death defying enough.

PS.  Can I have one for Christmas?

 Thanks to everyone who entered this competition

My favourites were:

Graham - because he'd buy Duncan a pint of potholer which Duncan deserves for writing a book for cavers to enjoy in the first place.

Duncan - as he's given all his copies away (however he didn't win due to trying to scupper his own competition!)

jcarter5826 - just for using the phrase unky dunky  ;D

Third place goes to .... cfmwh - though I've just watched the news and now have the burden of maybe starting WW3 on my shoulders  :o

Second place goes to Dudley bug - great photo!

The winner is Maj for his poem - I really liked:

Tales to be told of worry and strife,
Tangled in line, where's the knife?

One third in, one third out,
One third left to sort it all out.

Nice clear viz as you head on in,
But it's gone to bat s**t as soon as you fin.

Brilliant.

 :clap2: Congratulations Maj  :clap2:

Maybe you would post a review of 'Underground Potholer' as you'll have a copy and you have a way with words?!  :coffee:

Cheers, Pegasus

That's great news, Thanks. :beer2:

I'll probably buy Unky Dunky a pint of Potholer anyway. ;)

I should've seen that coming before I put digit to key board (and digit being singular is quite accurate).

Cheers,
Maj.

Well done Dave.  It was my favourite entry.  I will deliver to the dig tomorrow evening and accept a pint of Addlestones in the Poacher's Pocket by way of a substitute.

["Unky Dunky" - is only the tip of the iceberg - I've heard them all, Duncan Make The Garden Grow, Duncan Biscuit, Duncan Disorderly etc. - I can to a five minute standup routine based upone puns on my first and last name - like the Steve Martin "nose joke" sketch in the film "Roxanne"]
