Best Saxophone Song Ever
« on: February 24, 2018, 12:24:50 am »
One of those late night driving things.  I'll vote for Hazel O'Connor and Will You? I reckon it is way much better than Baker Street. There maybe others as well to consider.  As ever grateful for views. I just love her voice.

Yeah - it’s an amazing song and the one I’d have suggested first! Instead, I’ll suggest almost anthing by X-Ray Spex.....

I was lucky enough to be stood right in front of Wesley McGoogan when he played the sax solo on Will You at the Phoenix Building (later Nelson Mandella building) in Sheffield in 1980. Very memorable.

I've seen her since then but most of her more recent tours have been her complaining about how badly the music industry treated her over the Breaking Glass tour.

Another classic is 'Lily Was Here' by Dave Stuart and Candy Dulfer.

Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond' is another classic.

Candy Dulfer? Pink Floyd?

Here are just a few of the great jazz saxophonists whose music is simply on another level. Charlie Parker. John Coltrane. Cannonball Adderley. Booker Ervin. Sonny Stitt. Stan Getz.

And a contemporary heir to their incredible legacy: Kamasi Washington, seen here at Glastonbury in 2016:

I'm kinda with Prahja on this one.

Some people say that X Ray Spec was an early fusion of punk meets jazz, others that you can't add a badly played saxophone to a racket and call it music, but I say oh bondage up yours.....

Raw version or

2008 live version performed with her daughter.  RIP Poly

Punk spits down the end of your saxophone solos..  ;D

Anything by the late Matthew Coe (aka Xero Slingsby). Very active caver and digger; was one of the Skipton-based Coe family, several of whom were involved in caving; Randy Coe was co-editor of the first Northern Caves guide and Pete Coe (Matthew's father) did some of the very early cave diving in the Dales. Matthew was one heck of a character, the likes of which some younger folk probably just wouldn't believe these days.

Try this (note the Skipton accent):

and here's some information about him:

I'm quite partial to a bit of Eddie Harris. Listen Here! is a good one.

Jazz musicians are sometimes overly concerned with playing "outside" (and congratulating themselves on their funny scale over imaginary chord subsititutions) and forget tuneful and thoughtful improvisation. Eddie Harris was pretty good at this. I find people like John Coltrane a noise like shrieking lorry brakes.

Got to love a bit of Maceo

Probably doesn't count since it's not really a song, but rather a musical piece, but I find Amy Dickson's playing sublime and captivating.

Go and give a copy of 'Trane's "Ballads" a listen. Or his work on Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue". Shrieking lorry brakes it most certainly is not.

Indeed. Wonderful wonderful stuff.

I'm not certain whether the Lost Boys performance ever made it to record so I'll go for Ornette Coleman's Lonely Woman. A relatively obvious choice but I think one of the most evocative tracks ever recorded.

Waterboys Red Army Blues, now that is an epic. Stolen Child is one of my faves.
According to the video if we learn to play 'Baggy Trousers' on saxophone we can remove the need of a croll (either normal or rope shreddy) to ascend pitches....  :)

Yep. I'm familar with those, but something made me think of A Love Supreme and that is a row. I've played modern piano since I was about 16 (classical before) and although I am a bit rusty these days, I see things through the piano eye. Sax players are like candles on the cake, it's the cake that matters and the most important bit is the chord instrument IMO  I like a bit of Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock. I am very very partial to a bit of rhodes piano with a progressive fusion band. Chick Corea, etc.

I haven't really listened to things like Ornette Coleman, purely because there are no keys. Cecil Taylor.....that's a different matter.

Progressive jazz apart, a good tune with a (tenor) sax has got to have a bit of organ behind it. Preferably with an organ bassline and a dirty leslie speaker as well. :D

Eddie Harris was a bit of a trailblazer with his "wrong mouthpieces". Particularly trombone on tenor sax. His 70s funk stuff is quite good.

Dick Heckstall-Smith was a superb musician, and also my saxophone teacher. A lovely, generous man whose day job was lecturing at the LSE. He often used to play gigs with his fellow tenor player Art Themen, who during the day was neurologist. I got Dick to teach me  when I was 15 (I already played the clarinet and very basic sax) after attending a gig they did at the Seven Dials club in Covent Garden. The paint was blistering off the walls that night, and afterwards, I approached Dick and said, excuse me, that was amazing, do you give lessons by any chance? He did and I was round at his apartment the following week. As an opening exercise he got me to learn how to play the Charlie Parker theme Donna Lee. Not easy!

Resurrection of an elder thread...
Bat for Lashes (essentially Natasha Khan) have knocked it out the park with this one. Utterly brilliant. Hopefully a proper video will come later.
HMV had sold out so I'll have to get the vinyl later.
