Best Ever War Song
« on: May 16, 2019, 12:19:23 am »
I'll start with the following, but you won't believe me until you listen.  It's actually a Belinda Carlisle song, the wiki page doesn't seem to want to link so look it up. As ever comment and other vids.

And of course a video:

Bonnie Dobson singing her song Morning Dew backed by Danny Thompson and Robert Plant. This is the best version of a much covered song IMHO. It's on Youtube.

There's Eric Bogle's other classic war song to consider, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", as covered by the Pogues and many others....

Is that really Lemmy Kilminster singing that 1916 song?

I'll look on Motorhead's music in a slightly different way in future.

On a different note, does anyone else remember the late "Big Roy" Mundy singing The Green Fields Of France from time to time in the New Inn at Clapham, with great feeling?

It certainly is Lemmy - he could step outside of his usual territory when he wanted to, but he didn't often feel the urge which is a bit of a shame, I wonder what else he might have come up with.

When I first heard 1916 I found it hard to believe that it was Motorhead. I'm not afraid to admit that it brought tears to my eyes and in some undefinable way it changed my life ever so slightly.

M*A*S*H

It was the 1960-70s and the Vietnam war.  The TV programme version had sounds of a flying helicopter in the intro and of course Those Lyrics.   You can find them online or keep your mouth shut “if you please”.  Here is a nicely done but little viewed modern version that is true to the original tune:

Then there is the Bill Evans jazz trio version:

To be pedantic, M*A*S*H was based in the Korean War (1950- 53) , not Viet Nam.  :)

Maybe not the best song melodically, but you can actually sing it while engaged in serious street fighting, as I remember from South Audley Street and Grosvenor Square in the late 60s.

A very old topic, but this popped up in my YouTube feed, so apologies for that.  It's actually a WW1 song.

The " Vietnam" song is actually called " I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die ", though that's just one of many he did.

Mike Harding's "Bombers Moon" is another good tune.

One song, a particular favorite  my old squadron, usually sung when in the company of the Luftwaffe was "Wir Fliegen Gegen Engerlnd" and when with the Heer, Panzerlied.

Out of all of them though, one artist alone wrote, to me, and many other British Forces personel the ONLY
