Blue Monday is meant to be the saddest day of the year.  Determined as the third Monday of January because of the bad weather, dark nights, post-Christmas debt and failed New Year’s resolutions.  It has been much touted in the media since its invention in 2005.  It's actually made up by the travel industry to encourage people to book summer holidays.  Going to be a bumper one this year me thinks.

 ;) :'( :'(

Got me thinking of depressing songs...

I'm prone to the melancholy.

Anything by Daughter will let me wallow...

This re-working of Shallows is simply stunning - (along with the other recordings from this session).

Depressing, gloomy, songs?  That's right up my street.  How a bit of This Mortal Coil...

Enough gloomy blues. Here's one that's kind of wistful, but where the music is so utterly fantastic it can only improve your mood. Ignacio, the warden at the Ario refuge in the Picos, played this loud in the evenings during a little trip I led - with excellent results - in September 2019, not long before the pandemic deluge hit. Happy days!

I also associate Gary Moore with Northern Spain, as I once spent a week canyoning in the Pyrenees and the only CD in the car was a Gary Moore blues compilation. After the 7th or 8th listen I'd heard enough Gary Moore to last me a lifetime.

I too have a penchant for maudlin songs, I even have a "downers" play list but someone has to post the obvious cliche

Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt seems to have almost overtaken Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails original in exposure.  Both are of course excellent, but the poignancy of Cash's version has lovely melancholy reflections with an ultimately miserable ending.

I had a similar experience one Christmas  in the 1980s when we were in a holiday house. Everyone brought Chris DeBurgh tapes. I still hate the bloke to this day

For properly depressing music, you need a bit of Peter Hammill...

My first choice would be something by Eric Bogle - Whisky Wine, maybe? But there doesn't seem to be a youtube of this.

But the other goto singer to commit suicide by is, of course, Uncle Lenny - "The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor "

Old ... but not old enough to know any better

Hopefully this is all a bit tongue in cheek.

I do actually tend to avoid this kind of music these days, especially at this time of year.  In the words of Underworld,

"If it dont lift you,
it drags you down.
Keep away from the darkside".

If anyone out there is struggling at the moment, please reach out. Phone someone. Speak to your GP, the Samaritans, anyone.

The first step is always the hardest and lots of help is available.
