caving tattoo ideas
« on: November 09, 2021, 09:41:08 pm »
Have been wanting to get a caving tattoo for a long time, but been held back by being indecisive about which tattoo to get. Please help me brainstorm some caving-related tattoos!!

So far I've been thinking of:
- a collection of notable formations from Easegill (ie. the colonnades, bob's boss, painter's palette, fire hydrant, etc.)
- looking towards the waterfall in bullpot of the witches from the bottom of the chimney
- a lil SRT dude

and yes I'm serious about this  :bounce:

Whereabouts are you planning to have it? I'm guessing if it's an underground shot it'll have a 'frame' of some sort? Darkness fading out to skin-tone might be quite tricky?

Yeah if it ends up being an underground shot then it will have a frame, ideally the frame will be the shape of a cave entrance! Which cave entrance is yet to be decided

Do you know Phil Wharton (ex-DUSA)? He's got a pretty epic cave tattoo that's worth checking out.

Jubilee Cave near Malham is pretty tasty as an entrance - I made a t-shirt design from an outward-looking shot with masking, but that only works on a black background! But it looks like I have a big hole (and a tiny person) in my chest if I stand against a white wall, so that's pretty cool I guess. The outdoor shot might work, and you're welcome to trace that if you don't find anything better :)

Browgill's a nice-looking entrance . . . . but would you want a whole load of black ink surrounding it?

How about I get your face tattooed on my arse if you get my arse tattooed on your face?

Other ideas:

- a "tramp stamp" of a caver descending into your crack
- Andy Eavis but in the style of the Che Guevara poster every student used to have
- a Petzl Duo with a disappointed face next to it
- Krab around the nipple
- Draenan survey as a back piece
- Duncan Price in the bath
- the wording of the BCA participation statement on your thigh
- Josh Bratchley snoopy loops photo
- a wellie but tattooed life size, on your foot
- that cliche one people do of the planets in a line, but instead of planets it's the Petzl diagrams from the side of descenders
- the NUCC logo of the lion made of all the caving kit, or really just any of their t shirt designs
- one of the Wizards from namho

Hope this helped!

Mind you, a detailed survey of OFD or the Thrè Counties (properly kept up to date) could be useful if you are in there and get lost.

Tattoos are crazy unless you are at an advanced age. I look all these people and think what they'll look like with blurred smears all over them in a few years time. I also have a nice photo in my collection of a bas relief tattoo where the ?victim? reacted to the cinnabar in the red ink.  If you must have a tattoo get a fake one you can remove. Still I think the tattoo removal specialists will be doing a roaring trade in about 20 years time so anybody wants a career in this field that's a tip from me.

Cinnabar? Isn't that a mercury compound? Bet skin cells just love contact with that.

You can see the stereotypical generational divide on tattoos here so clearly (no offence). Once they may have been considered the markings of criminals, sailors and other hard nuts, but it is 2021 chaps, tattoos are an expression of life story, individuality and art to many, not something there to offend you. I hear the echoes of my parents in these comments, prior to them seeing the tattoos I have. Inks have also advanced a lot so that blurry fading of tattoos seen 20 years ago is not as much of an issue now. I'm also assuming the OP is not a child and can make their own mind up about their own body and does not need a lecture.
If you wouldn't get a tattoo yourself then fine, but don't impose your views onto others. I'd rather have my 4 tattoos than the overwhelming opinion that anyone who did have one was wrong and that my perfect blank skin was somehow superior. What I put on me is my choice. That said I won't get one on my face or neck because that's not my bag, but I won't judge anyone here that does (unless it's deliberately offensive in which case you're probably just an idiot).
And yes, one of mine is a caving tattoo, I'll try to remember to upload a pic.
Can we get back to seeing cool pics of other people's cave and mine tattoos and not read about those who don't agree with it. No offence intended, but it is not your choice and not what the OP was asking.

Fair comment Pete K - and no offence taken. I don't agree that anyone has been "lectured" though, as you seem to imply. I'm sure the OP can make their own mind up about such things but a friendly word just to say "Think it through carefully" surely causes no harm?

But I do think you're wrong in seeking to make this a generational thing, which I feel is (at best) meaningless. But - as you say - that's not what the OP asked so I'll shut up.  ;)

Yeah, what I should maybe have typed was "the often generation based bias" as that is what I meant by that, not that anyone of a certain age is automatically of the same opinion.

Maybe it is generational, but I am still building up to wearing a watch, so a tattoo is well in the distance.

However always keen to help (and also not wishing to insult the OP in anyway) I have the following suggestions;

How about your BCA number so in the event of an accident the landowner can claim no matter what state you are in?
A full football team, so that in the event of an accident a team of well know divers will come for you.
UKCaving.com so you can tap up Badlad and Pegasus for sponsorship - someones got to be a professional, so why not you?
A strategic Y hang
or for the older caver a ladder or carefully placed Stinky :o

Cinnabar is a mercury compound. I doubt very much anyone would be able to use it as a pigment, never mind a tattoo ink...
Old tattoos? They still look awesome!
Certainly assume one is for life, and think long and carefully, but in the end it's your choice. Find a good artist, and when ready go for it. Some are more painful than others!

I like to stand out out from the crowd, be a bit individual, so I don't have any tattoos.

I genuinely remember standing in the (Hillsborough) swimming baths when the kids were little; busy day, families, kids, grandparents etc; and actively looking around, searching out every single person in there.  I was the only  person in there, over the age of 16, without a tattoo.

They're like dogs and instagram.. just a bit trendy at the moment.  The latest must have.

I've probably only seen one or two tattoos in my whole life that I've thought.. wow, that looks cool.  The rest just look a bit shit to be honest.  They look a bit like stickers on cars.. you know, when a climber sticks loads of 5.10/patagonia/Black Dimond etc stickers all over their Nova.

Thank you for your ideas everyone, they're much appreciated!! Both the useful ones and the humorous ones - some of them did make me chuckle  ;D I've also loved seeing all of your caving related tattoos too!

Regarding opinions about whether I get one or not, getting a tattoo about something that I love dearly & that is a central part of my identity, and expressing it in an artistic way, is something that I have absolutely no qualms about. I already have several tattoos, two of which are on my right arm and are of my favourite mountain and my ice axe - hence why I want a caving related one on my left arm :)

As a general rule, I make an active choice to *not* live my life analysing whether every decision I make is something I *might* regret. I make decisions based on what is important to me, and I do things because I love them, and so far that method has worked out pretty well from me.

There's a common misconception, it seems, that tattoos are for the admirers and not for the wearer's pleasure. If you don't like them, it might be jarring to realise you're not the intended audience.

Anyways if you agree with Sam T (who I am sure, in practising his individuality, doesn't look at all like every other Derbyshire caver ;) ) you could eschew tattoos entirely and go for other types of body art? I've been experimenting with shaving a karabiner shape into my pubic thatch

I like to stand out out from the crowd, be a bit individual, so I don't have any tattoos.

I tend to find that most cavers are cynical old grumps, so the prevailing concensus amongst them is usually to avoid tattoos and piercings. In that regard it's probably more likely that having tattoos as a caver actually makes you stand out amongst your caving peers rather than blending in with the crowd of inked surface-dwellers.

Anyway, onto my ideas...

I've often thought that a forearm piece of this 19th Century Chad hewing coal in a narrow seam would make a good tattoo for fans of mines.

My other idea is one I'm saving for myself, but I'm happy to share the idea because I'm pretty sure someone else will already have thought of it anyway...

I'm thinking of doing an assortment of minimalist caving iconography along my arm - which would include things like the diagram of how to rig a Simple that can be found on the descender, maybe a few different knots/a y-hang and such.

It definitely won't include the Sieg Heil symbol that Petzl inexplicably used to put on the Croll though

I would suggest NOT text or surveys, as they do tend to age badly, but I would say find an image that speaks to you and get a good artist. If you must have text, you a large chunky font and spell check several times, as well as asking a grammar nerd to look it over  ;D

Was thinking of getting a tattoo of a rabbit wearing a caving helmet looking wretched (whatever that means) because county to WR was my first ever caving trip (well technically a trip in Ardeche was but I can't remember which cave it was now). The only problem is that I don't actually like WR, I think it's boring and the worst Easegill entrance so maybe not a good idea

The "Wretched Rabbit" was found from inside and it was dead...

perhaps a dead rabbit would make a good tattoo then.
alternatively a whirlpool and multi-headed monster to represent scylla & charybdis, which are my favourite holes.
or a nice minaret's type silhouette which is probably the most practical of these three options, but also the least fun.

Here's one at the base of a quarry face that should have been wearing a helmet :)

And it collapsed and is likely to be for some time, so I guess you are quite happy then lol. Was it you I saw with a large sledge hammer almost a year ago then ;). As you went in County though you could have the overlay of the 3 county boundaries?

I had been thinking about getting a tattoo myself, though never did it. I was thinking a Petzl Stop, as my life literally depends on it, on my upper arm.
Anything I say is represents my own opinion and not that of a any club/organisation that I am a member of (unless its good of course)

I'm sure I've heard somewhere that the 'wretched (dead) rabbit remains' were wrongly identified, and were in fact those of a fox. Maybe the name of the passage shoud be changed to 'Phantom Fox' or 'F***** Fox' or some such.

Yes, 'good riddance' was my first thought, but after several clusterf*cks in Lancs / County this fresher's season I have changed my mind. One of these involved over 30 student cavers (from Newcastle, MUSC and ULSA) trying to get up/down the first pitch in county, and for about 15 members of the group it was the first time they'd ever done SRT so you can imagine what the traffic jam was like. I now think it would have been far more useful if wretched had been opened up for fresher's season and then strategically demolished again.

Just googled 'three counties boundary' and it came up with Gloucestershire/Herefordshire/Worcestershire. I will try again. That's actually not a bad idea though, because we all know that the Three Counties system is the best in the land.

A Petzl stop would be a cool tattoo! Though simple, or rack purists (if there are any of those left) might beg to differ.

This falls squarely into the "Dad Joke" category, and it's even more lame when written not spoken, but I still couldn't resist

Did you hear about the bald man who had a rabbit tattooed on his head?
From a distance it looked like he had a little hare...

Edit, I think a Simple would look better than a Stop
