Is caver Keith , Keith Edwards by any chance if so bro love your videos and stills buddy
I'm afraid so. Caver Keith is my alter ego. The transformation is effected by removing my specs and donning the helmet, lamp and wellies.
Thanks for your kind comment. One of these days possibly I will make another caving video. Just lacking motivation at the moment.

Like Clark Kent removing his glasses. Nobody would have recognised you if Paul hadn't blown your cover, the disguise was near perfect ;)

I've just started making some videos of my caving trips and I realise I am in the presence of greatness here so was wondering if anyone had any constructive feedback on the video I've just made for my Titan trip? I've made a couple videos before but this is the first one I've actually put effort into editing/doing a voiceover for. Do you think it strikes the right balance between footage and information? I think perhaps I should've made it a bit 'tighter'.

Andrew first of all let me say, pretty good  everybody seems to develop there own style , i certaily have mine .
Firstly the narration is good just make sure you don't make any errors with it or people on YT seem to like to jump on people for the tiniest of mistakes .  :-\

Second edit harder then hard again as if you dwell on something to long your audience will switch off ( they soon get bored ) An example is the opening shaft decent sequence I would have no more than 5 secs UNLESS something different is happening to keeps peoples eye. I find when editing if I'm getting bored the audience certainly will .

Last but not least get a couple of proper dive video lights that will cover the whole picture , nowadays they are not expensive the one we use are only about ?60 each and waterproof to 90 mts the only problem with the cheaper ones is they can be a bit cold and the kelvins to high, check the kelvin rating before you buy any . Optimal is 5500-5700 but you can go a bit higher but certainly no higher than 6500 kelvins.

And to conclude my videos are far from perfect  ;)

Paul, thank you very much - exactly what I was looking for in terms of constructive feedback.

Unfortunately (as you probably spotted) there is a small error in the introduction which has already been picked up upon in the comments of the video - not that I mind - it's good to have the accurate information available for future viewers. I will make sure to triple and quadruple check next time...

I think you are absolutely right regarding editing hard. When re-watching the video after I uploaded it (despite watching it over and over when editing and not noticing) I was struck by how long the entrance shaft scene continues with no voiceover or anything else to grab attention. Definitely something I've taken to heart for next time. I think the whole video could've been less than 10 minutes (rather than 14) and probably show just as much of Titan whilst being more engaging.

Thanks for the tip regarding the dive lights. I have a nice floodlight torch but obviously I need something for when I am using helmet mounted footage. I am trying to move away from the helmet mounted stuff and more towards static shots with proper lighting, however I'm not quite there yet and obviously for an SRT based video such as that one it is difficult.

Video production/editing is certainly a Pandora's box and the learning curve seems to be very steep but I look forward to improving over time. Thanks again for your reply.

Andrew what I would have done with entrance shot scene , was to start on the rigging and slowly pan down to the caver, as said maybe 5-6 secs.

That's why I stopped voice overs and started using music , there was always some smart arse wanting to correct you.Look forward to your future efforts. good luck !

Very nice to see this - we met at the Chapel after our Longcliffe trip on the 30th and we showed you Elise's video of us digging. It's good to see Titan in that light - I've done it many times in wet and dry conditions, but try to avoid climbing back up it too often - though the alternative is probably more tiring in reality. Good to see the bounce phenomenon. And yes, the surface shaft is always brutal, especially when you know what's outside. Me and D hung under that lid for twenty mins once L reached us and we had to get out :)

I would concur with Paul on the editing - be brutal. The scenery is spectacular, but it can be overdone, and maintaining interest is critical, as in the entrance shaft section. If you try to imagine the video as a comic-book of still frames, how many pages would it be? I would suggest only two - but they would be two good pages! The voiceover was excellent though. and very useful, and being able to hear the natural sounds also was great - I'd much prefer that than some pounding 'excitement music', and you know I like my cave sounds!

Look forward to seeing the next one :)

Phil.

Hi Phil - it's a nice surprise to hear from you here, just as it was lovely to meet you at TSG. We would like to do the trip again either when Peak Cavern is open or we have enough bodies to go out of JH but unfortunately neither of those options were available to us on 1st Jan. I did quite enjoy ascending Titan and it gave a good opportunity to look around without worrying about falling to my death, but equally it would be nice to have some variety on the way out!

Interesting analogy regarding the comic book and I can certainly see where you are coming from. I think the biggest lesson from this video is to be more brutal with the editing and I can't wait until I've got some more footage available to be able to put this into practice. Now that I've started I'm finding the whole video production process quite addictive and I'm looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into more of it. I've never been a huge fan of music on videos, although it can be done well by some creators, I think it's a balance that I'd be unable to strike myself and it's probably easier just to not bother and rely on the voiceover to provide the interesting audio.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and hopefully we can meet again at some point.

The editing Andrew can be really addictive I play about for hours on the tiniest thing and little detail. I went mad on my Rhiwbach trough Trip with Patterdale terrier and had music AND water sounds on the waterfall scene
