Caving Wiki

That's strange Paul - apart from me, there are currently 8 other users. Usernames are case-sensitive, but I guess you've thought of that.

Is anyone else having the signup problem?

I've just tried and had the same problem.

i don't block cookies and i get
"There is no user by the name "Cave Troll""

notice the space, when my username has an "_" in the middle  .

History
Equipment
Technique
    SRT
    Photography
guidebook
    country
        region
              area
                  cave

etc
and then get people to remember that this is a book and not a discussion forum.

Apparantly you can't have spaces your username, and I'm guessing the system doesn't allow underscores either, or converts them to a space.

Can you register as CaveTroll ?

This doesn't explain Paul's p[roblem though.

OK thats me in cas "CaveTroll" (man thats hard to type without a "_")
never having added to a wiki before,
how do we add new topics and sub topics.
what structure can we agree on?

You should be able to see "edit" links and tabs - those enable you to make edits.

To add a new topic, you just create a link to it - see what I've done with the "FAQ" link.

Beyond that, I'm also a wiki virgin so I don't know much about it myself.

Here's a link to the user guide: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_User's_Guide

Are either of you blocking the cookie?

The very idea  :o

Bubba my login seems to be working fine.

I've been generally having a play with the Wiki. Once you get the idea of how to create a new page its a doddle. I can see this turning into a great consumer of time.

Oh, has anyone got a picture for the page on the Hunter's?

Dooh!  :o What the hell is a Wiki. ?????
See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

It's basically a collaborative web site - a website that everyone can edit/add to. The idea is that you end up with a peer-reviewed site that can constanty grow and has no firmly defined structure.

We use wiki's at work for disseminating information and it is quite fun and easy to do. I'd love to do a bit on the caving one if I can find time...

I'm having a few problems with references
trying to use <ref>example reference</ref> following examples at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext_reference

any ideas?

also i want to include a photo on a page . Can i either show a photo that is held on an external webpage, or upload a piccie to the server.
i've tired using [[image:http://blah.com.blah.jpg]] also <img src= and even <nowiki><img src="http

I had a play for 10mins, I added Forest of Dean as a caving area. Why does everyone forget it? :spank: I have added some sections to Mendip as layed out in Barrington and Stanton.

I have copyright worries: if I add a list of caves from Barrington and Stanton and/or Mendip Underground, and/or CSCC web page, am I breaking copyright? Indeed I thought I read that CSCC list is derived from Barrington and Stanton book, although I can't find that credit on their site now. I presume adding a reference that is from their work will make it ok?

So if it is new work, we can't write the locations or names of any caves described? Knowledge is based upon other knowledge. :-\
